Downhill superstar Connor Fearon from Adelaide took out the 2017 RedAss Downhill Enduro NSW/ACT State Championship title in Thredbo and the rising star, Sian A’Hern from Canberra dominated the Elite Women’s divisions for the entire Rocky Trail Gravity Weekend that also featured Round 2 of the Fox Rollercoaster Superflow Series on the popular Kosciuszko National Park trails.
With the fastest seeding time, Connor Fearon won the Elite Men’s race in Thredbo in 4:40,11 and claimed the 2017 NSW/ACT State Championship title of the RedAss Downhill Enduro Series. In second was Brent Smith from Woronora Heights (4:6,38) ahead of Thomas Crimmins (4:48,43).
In the women’s Sian A’Hern backed up her win on Saturday with a race time of 5:37,93 to take the female title ahead of local gun Teegan Molloy (5:45,37). Kellie Weinert from Kearns placed in third with 5:52,09.
Junior categories show strength in numbers
Almost half of the downhill field in Thredbo was made up of Junior categories between U13 and U19 and event organiser and Race Director Martin Wisata from Rocky Trail said that for 2017, NSW partner clubs will be hosting state rounds with points going towards the series.
“Downhill is a very niche sport and we need strong clubs to sustainably grow it and get juniors into it early. We want to support and help promote club-run downhill races by awarding them state-level points. We’re hoping that it will boost rider numbers at that club platform, so that we can continue to grow this sport from the grassroots level up”, Wisata explained.
